7 Tips for Avoiding Expensive Copper Pipe Repairs

1.) If There's a Clear Issue, Don't Wait

This is really true of most plumbing issues. Generally speaking, it's not a good idea to put off a residential plumbing problem. When it comes to water and gas, however,  this is even more true. Issues in these systems can cause major damage, injury, or worse. Bottom line: pipe leak repair is a service to move quickly on.

2.) Pinhole Leaks are Symptomatic of Corrosion

While a pinhole leak seems small, water doesn't take long to accumulate. A tiny leak also points to a deeper issue. Because just as the Colorado carved its way through the Grand Canyon over many years, so can the water in a home begin to corrode the inside of its copper piping systems (Providence Plumbing).

3.) Take Note of Any Major Changes

We human beings expect a lot from our water. After all, more than half of the human body is made up of it! But what about when water isn't where it's supposed to be? Water stains on the walls, floors, or ceilings are a common sign of damage. A pipe leak repair may be in order in cases like these.

Musty smells, visible mold, rising water bills, and reduced water pressure are further signs that you may have a a problem with your piping.

4.) Check "Hidden" Pipes Annually

A burst pipe can cause swift and significant issues, but so can an undiscovered pinhole leak. A wise homeowner might make a point yearly of checking those pipes that are less accessible around the home.

5.) Remove Pipe Scale

Gradually over time, a pipe may develop an internal mineral buildup. This type of mineral layer deposit is called "pipe scale," and it may be the culprit behind your pipe leak repair woes. Pipe scale appears on the inside walls of piping, making it impossible to identify prior to beginning work.

The process of removing minerals or "pipe descaling" may depend on the extent of the damage. A hard scrub with the right tools will often do the job, but not always. In some cases, hydro jetting or targeted chemicals may be required.

6.) Avoid Doing It Yourself

Repairing a copper pipe is often as simple as removing the offending section and replacing it with two new couplings and a fresh section of copper. Sometimes, it's even possible to seal the leak with pipe leak tape instead of a full copper pipe repair.

Accessing the pipe in the first place, however, is often the primary issue. This may require either hydro excavation or digging.

"Hydro excavation" is a minimally invasive process. We use it when and where we can in our own work. Digging can be more disruptive for residents, but sometimes it is necessary. Either way, professional expertise will ensure a safe and successful copper pipe repair.

7.) Budget for Water Damage Cleanup

Once pipe leak repairs are finished, there's still the question of the cleanup. Be sure to ask about water damage cleanup when you speak with your local plumbing company. They may be able to put you in touch with a preferred water/fire restoration service if that kind of cleanup is required.
